Pet Owners

Welcome to the ESCCAP UK & Ireland pet owners' website, designed to bring you expert and independent information on how best to protect your pet and family from the parasitic threats found in the UK, Ireland and abroad.

ESCCAP UK & Ireland prides itself on providing practical advice to pet owners and veterinary and animal care professionals in order to protect pets from parasitic infections and to minimise the risk of their transmission between animals and humans.

Using this website you will be able to browse trustworthy information about how best to keep your pet and family protected, as well as finding out more about the parasites from which your pet is at risk.

Best friends share everything.… but are they sharing more than you think?

It's fairly common for a dog or cat to become infected with a parasite at some point in its lifetime. In fact, from a very young age, your pet is at risk and can be affected in a number of ways, ranging from simple irritations to life-threatening conditions if left untreated. Some parasites can even affect and transmit diseases to you and your family members.

Management of parasites should be an important consideration for all responsible pet owners. All pets are at risk from becoming infected with parasites such as worms, fleas and ticks during day-to-day life.

Caring for your pet's wellbeing means you will also be protecting your family. Unfortunately, the risks to humans are very real and can vary from an upset stomach to, on rare occasions, something much more serious.

The good news is that protecting your pet and family is easy and the more you understand about these pet parasites the better you can ward off future risks and keep your pet and family out of harm's way.

Within this website, you will find a number of references to SQPs. SQP stands for 'suitably qualified person' and they are animal health advisors who are qualified to prescribe or supply veterinary medicines outside of veterinary practices. SQPs commonly work in pet shops or country stores, where they will be the appointed person to deal with veterinary medicine enquiries or purchases. A number of veterinary nurses are also SQPs, allowing them to prescribe veterinary medicines to clients.
