Emerging challenges in companion animal parasitology: a one health perspective

Companion animal parasitology is evolving rapidly in response to changing environmental conditions, increased pet travel and movement, and emerging zoonotic risks.

This session at the London Vet Show will discuss current and emerging challenges in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of parasitic diseases in dogs and cats, with emphasis on parasites of growing clinical and public health importance.

Participants will gain insights into changing parasite trends, advances in diagnostic approaches, antiparasitic resistance, and evidence-based control strategies. Through a One Health lens, the session will also explore the interconnected impacts of animal, human, and environmental health on parasite transmission and disease control.

Attendees will leave with practical knowledge to enhance client communication and integrated parasite management in contemporary veterinary practice. By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

• Recognise emerging parasitic threats in companion animals.
• Review current diagnostic approaches for key parasitic diseases.
• Discuss contemporary challenges in parasite prevention and control.
• Appreciate the role of a One Health approach to companion animal parasitology

During this session, the winner of the ESCCAP UK & Ireland Parasite Control Champion of the Year 2026 award will be presented with their prize.
