Thanks to Christine Middlemiss for highlighting in this week's Vet Record, the zoonotic risks of Brucella canis entering the UK in imported dogs https://bvajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/vetr.227.
This risk extends to veterinary professionals coming into contact with infected dogs in practice as well as new owners and charity workers. Vigilance for relevant clinical signs in imported dogs is vital alongside screening dogs imported from endemic countries.
ESCCAP UK & Ireland believes screening for significant zoonoses on entry to the UK now needs to be considered in any reshaping of pet importation rules.
