A paper published in the Vet Record this week veterinaryrecord.bmj.com suggests that there was an increased risk of Babesia transmission in Essex up to and during the recorded outbreak this year. This presents the possibility that there were unpublished cases before the recorded outbreak and possibly a longer standing foci of infected Dermacentor ticks in Essex than we realised. It nicely demonstrates how Veterinary and medical health professionals need to be aware of the possibility of vector borne disease outbreaks and to be including exotic vector borne diseases on their differential lists for relevant clinical signs.
