Hyalomma anatolicum excavatum is mainly found in the warmer climates of the Mediterranean, however it has been known to survive in areas with a marked winter

Pathogenesis

Cattle/Horse: Theileria annulata, Bovine babesiosis

Description

Adult female dorsal features

• Scapular grooves are steep
• Legs have pale rings
• Porose area is small
• Unfed female can measure 5.0mm-6.5mm in length
• Engorged females can measure up to  in length 20mm in length

Adult female ventral features

• Coxae I: long and distinct internal and external spur, that are large and equal
• Coxae II-II: indistinct external spurs that can be hard to see
• Coxae IV: indistinct internal spur

Adult male dorsal features

• Cervical field depression is apparent
• Lateral grooves are short
• 2x posterior ridges present
• Central festoon is pale in colour
• Paracentral festoons are joined anteriorly
• Paramedian grooves are small and indistinct
• Males can measure between 3.8mm-5.00mm

Adult male ventral features

• Adanal shields present; square ended
• Accessory adanal shields present; small
• Sub-anal plates present; distinct and aligned with adanal shield
• Coxae I: long and distinct internal and external spur, that are large and equal
• Coxae II-II: indistinct external spurs that can be hard to see
• Coxae IV: indistinct internal spur
